YourWay App is a modern system that allows visually impaired individuals to navigate the city independently. YourWay is the response from the Chance Foundation – We Are Together (formerly the Foundation for the Blind) to the challenges of the "Accessibility Plus" program, which stipulates that public utility facilities should be adapted to the needs of people with disabilities.

Since 2014, the Foundation, in collaboration with Altix, has been conducting design and implementation work. Thanks to the involvement of our experts, the YourWay system has been gradually implemented across the country since 2017, offering unique market solutions tailored to the needs of people with disabilities.

The YourWay application is available to users on smartphones with internet access. At the beginning of 2021, the number of markers in the country was 333, and by 2024, this number had grown to over 3,000. Among the facilities equipped with this system are ministries, museums, offices, cultural centers, and many other places that are now fully accessible to the blind and visually impaired.

How does YourWay work?

YourWay is a simple but innovative solution that involves placing small transmitters on devices or in strategic locations. Their usage is facilitated through a free application available for both Android and iOS operating systems. Through information sent directly to the smartphone or announced by a speaker integrated with the marker, users can not only better orient themselves in space but also receive information about the places they pass by and their destinations.

Navigation

To use the YourWay system, you only need a mobile phone with the app installed, which can be downloaded for free from Google Play or the App Store. When a blind person approaches a marker, the device signals its presence. Depending on the version of the transmitter, the user receives a text or audio message if the marker is equipped with a speaker. Messages can provide substantive information such as: "You are standing in front of the painting 'Battle of Grunwald' by Jan Matejko," "You are in front of the building," "You are in the main hall," "The elevator is on your right," etc. Installing several such markers in a building can make it much more friendly to visually impaired people!

Database of accessible facilities

The YourWay application is not only a navigation tool for facilities and their surroundings but also a rich database of places adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. Simply enter the name of the city, and the YourWay app will display a list of facilities adapted to the needs of users, along with descriptions of the implemented adaptations. For example, you can find out that the New Theatre in Warsaw is equipped with tactile maps and ramps for wheelchair users. Accessibility information can be updated by both system users and facility managers. It is up to them whether a facility is positively noted in the YourWay database. We encourage you to adapt your institutions and add them to the YourWay database to make them more accessible!

Where can YourWay transmitters be installed?

YourWay is applicable in all public utility facilities, including offices, universities, schools, airports, train stations, museums, shopping centers, as well as in urban spaces such as buildings, public transport stops, and other key locations frequently visited by people with disabilities. The YourWay system is also useful for able-bodied individuals seeking various information. Transmitters can function like bulletin boards, transmitting not only navigation data but also various other important information, such as institution opening hours, phone numbers, announcements, or other relevant content, making YourWay a universal informational tool for a wide audience.

YourWay transmitters come in 5 different versions:

  • YourWay Beacon – a compact transmitter that signals its presence to mobile devices with the YourWay app installed. It is designed for navigation both indoors and outdoors. The device can transmit any text information that the user's phone will read aloud. The transmitter provides navigation information, place descriptions, or detailed data about exhibits and buildings. Its main advantages are discretion and low cost, making it an ideal solution in places where it is not possible to install a version with a speaker or where a large number of transmitters need to be installed, e.g., in many rooms along a corridor.
  • YourWay Plus – this model differs from the Beacon version by having a built-in speaker that can signal its presence automatically when a user with a mobile device is nearby or on explicit request from the app user. In addition to providing descriptive information, the transmitter generates a sound that makes it easier to locate. YourWay Plus is particularly useful in places where it is important to clearly indicate key points on the way to an object, such as entrances, tactile plans, registration points, or receptions.
  • YourWay Box – this transmitter has a speaker housed in a larger casing, which can additionally be equipped with a control keypad, tactile plan, or descriptions in Braille.
  • YourWay NFC – this plaque does not require power and is equipped with raised, contrasting letters and Braille inscriptions. The built-in small NFC chip activates the app installed on the user's phone. It can transmit navigation and substantive information, e.g., audio descriptions. To receive information, simply approach the YourWay NFC plaque within a few centimeters. This version is particularly useful for marking doors or exhibits in museums.
  • YourWay Terminal – this device contains a tactile plan with a touch map of the place or surroundings. This interactive marker can activate navigation, substantive, and audio description messages, providing users with comprehensive information about the location.

By equipping your institution with the YourWay system, you not only meet statutory obligations but also demonstrate a professional approach to accessibility issues for people with disabilities. YourWay is a step towards the full integration of society, where a person is not defined by their limitations but is treated with respect and consideration for their needs.
